The Fascinating History of Coffee

Coffee is perhaps the most beloved drink of the world. Millions of people around the world begin their day with coffee. Without coffee many people cannot start their day. It provides a perfect start to your morning. There are many stories that tell us how coffee became the most popular morning drink in the world. These stories are variedly interesting and involve many chance occurrences and pursuit of power wealth and influence.

According to one legend a sheep herder in Caffa Ethiopia was the first to discover the effects of coffee. While herding his cattle he found his cattle eating some red cherries. Subsequently he also found out that after eating these red cherries his goats started becoming hyper active. Intrigued he tried on these cherries himself and soon he was as hyperactive as his herd. The monks in the area scolded him calling the red cherries the devil’s fruit and shouted at him for indulging himself. However soon the monks realized that the shiny green plant that gave of the fruit was the very thing that the monks needed to stay awake for their prayers.

Also there is another legend that tells us that coffee was actually called mocha. It was discovered in Arabia. An Arabian sheik called Omar was banished in the desert with all his followers. There they were to die of starvation. At an act of desperation Omar made one of his friends collect fruit from an unknown plant and boil them to prepare a meal. This meal not only saved the entire exile party but also its survival gave a religious significance to the nearest town that went by the name of mocha where they settled. After this event, the plant was called mocha.

In early times coffee was used more than just a drink. It was originally found in Ethiopia but it was later transplanted in Arabia and soon Arabia monopolized the coffee industry. Coffee beans were wrapped along with animal fat and eaten. This was an excellent source of nutrition to the raiding armies. The caffeine also kept them active. This was also their only source of nutrition. History tells us that Turks were the first country to adopt it as a drink. Arabia considered coffee a delicacy and guarded it with utmost secrecy. That is why it was introduced much later to countries that were outside Arabia.

At one point of time coffee was being considered by some Christians to be the “devil’s drink” and there was a small progressing demand that it be banned. However, Pope Vincent III tasted coffee and found it so delicious that he refused to banish it. Thereby, coffee became a devil’s temptation free drink as well.

Today coffee is enjoyed world wide by millions of people across the world. Coffee and its various forms are highly enjoyed by people from all countries. It is highly regarded as a morning drink and thousands of people are hooked on to the caffeine for its properties that help them stay awake and work for long hours.

What is Turkish Coffee

Caffeine is a drug, yes, but a very sweet one at that. It enhances the senses and uplifts the spirits. Coffee is, without a doubt, a culture unto itself. Used as a means to gather, laugh and debate. Coffee is a social beverage. Its roots are as storied and full as the roasts you may drink.

Within the borders of Turkey coffee has become an institution. It has its own culture complete with ritual and house of worship (coffeehouses). Turkish coffee, in particular may, without a doubt in most coffee lovers’ minds be the be all and end all of coffee. It was introduced to Turkey in the early to mid 1500’s, finding the first coffeehouse opening soon after.

Coffee came at a rather interesting time in Turkish history as it was geared more toward decadence than business. This gave way to many rituals. One of which was to brew the beans slowly over fifteen to twenty minutes in a copper coffee pot nestled among the embers of smoldering charcoal. The pot was removed frequently to prevent overheating. You can certainly tell the difference, if you are a coffee connoisseur, between Turkish coffee and your run of the mill modern day restaurant coffee.

The Turks believed in delicate brewing and all that was needed was a copper pot that came to a point, a teaspoon and something to heat it with. Water was always cold and the coffee fresh ground right before brewing. One thing that makes Turkish coffee so good, rich and special as that many would add cardamom and or sugar to the ground prior to brewing. Also unique is that the ingredients were added to the water instead of the water added to the ingredients. After all of the ingredients are added, they are stirred, spoon removed and pot placed on the heating source. No more stirring occurs and the pot is removed periodically to prevent the overheating mentioned earlier.

Identifying well prepared Turkish coffee is easy. It’s not too hot and has a thick foam resting comfortably on top and is free of any dark particles. In some circumstances, the coffee is brought to a boil and just before boiling over is removed the heat then replaced to do it all over again. This process is done two or three times and concentrates the coffee down. Cold water is served and drank before the coffee to cleanse the palette. Traditionally, the pastry known as Turkish Delight was served alongside the coffee and afterward you’re treated to mint liqueur.

Turkish coffee is special. Not because it tastes good, but because of the care and love that is put into the preparation and consumption of it. Coffee has a very special meaning to the Turkish people and to the culture of their land and that should be respected. The whole premise and life of coffee in Turkey gave way to all of the coffeehouses and coffee business that we partake in to this day from our Starbucks and Dunkin Donuts to your mom and pop Beatnik Coffee Dens. Without Turkish coffee, we would have no coffee at all.

The best coffee froth

To froth or not to froth - that is the question. Frothing (or foaming) milk has been done for quite some time now. Coffeehouses and baristas the world over have not been doing it because they were bored or what not but because frothing the milk enhances the taste of the espresso. The flavor profiles go out of this world and you are left with a sweetness that is so delectable to behold.

There is even a new art form that is being derived from frothing called “Latte Art”. The canvas is a fresh cup of pulled espresso and properly foamed up milk. The barista pours the frothed milk onto the hot coffee to make patterns and designs - “Latte Art”.

Your frothing experience begins with the tools of the trade. However not a necessity, one will need a milk pitcher. Sure - you could use plastic but why cheapen your experience? Besides - If you are frothing in metal, it holds temperature better. If art is your goal, select a pitcher with a narrow and longer spout. If not then any shape will work for you. Do not over do it - nothing more than twenty ounces.

Now that you have your pitcher, get yourself a thermometer. A good one - not one of those dollar store things. Something with a digital read out would be ideal. You will need a damp cloth to wipe off the steamer nozzle. In addition, a spoon should be handy. After you spend time frothing you will get better and a spoon will not be needed. Your next selection is most important of all - the milk. Any milk will do for the most part but you want some fat to add extra taste so whole milk is your safe bet and, for a special treat, table cream.

Milk frothing is the process of adding air into it at a high rate from the Coffee Maker . Now with your warm cups in hand and your coffee ground, brewed and ready, it is time to froth. The easiest way to get the best froth is by using an automatic milk steamer and it is fairly easy to operate.

First, you have to come to the party. If you are not there, the machine will kind of just sit there - that is boring. Of course, nearly as important is turning the thing on. These machines always have a “steam” button, which heats the boiler - you will need to wait for the little light to come on to tell you it is ready for action. When all of this is said and done, you must place the frothing arms deep into the milk pitcher. Tilt the pitcher toward yourself at a 45-degree angle then open the steamwand and that is it, because the frother will do the rest. Once you hit that 150-155 degree temp you’re done. However, the froth will just be so-so.

The effect coffee has on health

There are many health benefits of drinking coffee. If you are a coffee drinker and you drink 4-5 cups of coffee a day then you shouldn’t worry about it being harmful to your body.

The caffeine in coffee is also known as a drug because it is a stimulant. The stimulant in caffeine affects the nervous system by making people feel more invigorated and less fatigued. Some people are awakened by the smell of freshly brewed coffee. The senses are sharper when someone drinks coffee. It is also known to improve a person’s alertness, performance, and mental concentration.

It is known to increase your metabolic rate, relaxes the muscles, and helps in preventing migraine headaches. Coffee is also used to treat asthma because it is works in dilating the bronchial airways.

Other effects on the body that caffeine has on your body from coffee is that it increases urine production. A change in the heart rate occurs and blood pressure increases also. These are positive effects that are good for the body and make people feel more alive on a day to day basis.

Coffee is a common drink for students in college because of the alertness it provides in the body. Students drink a lot of coffee in the mornings to wake up and become alert for their early morning classes. They also drink coffee all night long while they are cramming for exams and doing their studies because the caffeine in coffee allows them to be more alert, stay awake, and be able to concentrate on the information they are trying to learn.

When too much coffee is drunk then it can have negative effects on the body. Today, people drink coffee drinks like espresso and cappuccinos that contain larger amounts of caffeine than a normal cup of coffee. When people drink many of these drinks regularly they develop a dependency on the caffeine and their body begins to need it. The problem occurs when they begin to cut down on the coffee or go a day without the caffeine. This can result in withdraws that might cause severe headaches, fatigue, or even irritable behaviors.

Coffee also has acidity in it that might cause problems if you have an ulcer or sensitivities to acidic foods. You need to be careful about the amount of acid you are taking in or you can cause your stomach to be upset. This would include drinking orange juice along with coffee in the morning because of the amounts of acid in the juice.

It is advised to pregnant women that they should not drink a lot of coffee and if they can avoid drinking coffee then they should. It is said coffee can be responsible for birth defects in babies. It is also said that people who suffer from heart problems should not drink coffee unless it is decaffeinated because their heart doesn’t need the effects of the stimulation caused from the caffeine.

Coffee makes people feel good and revived when they drink it. It can have many positive benefits on your body because of the caffeine but you might want to think about your health if your doctor recommends you cut down or stop drinking a lot of caffeine.

Krups Espresso Maker

This coffee maker is a great one for anyone to have because it works very well with its 900 watt power output, with steam function instead of a pump, with 4 bars of maximum pump pressure, water capacity of ten standard cups, attached coffee maker and automatic, this is a must have for any and every coffer lover!

In case you are wondering about the size of this piece of work, here are the specs; the height is 13 inches, the length is 12 inches, the depth 14 inches, and the weight 12 pounds. There is also a one year warranty on the product.

Let us go through some customer reviews and see what people that bought the product had to say about it. Many of the reviews say that the biggest disappointment of this coffee maker is that the handle of the espresso pot fell off after just a month or two.

This was said in a few reviews and not only one. Another con would be that customers said they had to fiddle with some of the knobs to get them to work and to get the espresso to start dripping. Another person said that there was no crema, the steam wand works strangely, the frothing isn’t done well and they felt that they bought a cheap machine. Another customer said that the only problem with the machine is that it is rather large, that’s all.

Another review says that the froth function (stem) worked extremely well for them and they had no other problems with the machine. It just does its job, makes good espressos and excellent coffee. Another customer loves the machine because it doesn’t make too much noise when it is brewing and it is quick when making a whole pot and highly recommend it to anyone.

Many other reviews spoke about this machine being so wonderful because you don’t have to have a coffee machine and an espresso machine on your kitchen counter taking up unnecessary space. Sure the Espresso xp1500 is a big device but it is still smaller and much more convenient then having the two separate machines. Someone also said that they were impressed with the speedy delivery of the machine and they have used it everyday for the past month and they have not yet come across any problems.

The Ways coffee helps your health?

All right. We all know that Coffee is that mystical beverage that almost everyone grew up smelling in the kitchen as a child and in the coffee isle at the grocery store while walking through with mom. But healthy?

It was not long ago when the beverage was considered to be somewhat questionable in the health department. Today, the professionals are taking a much different view of the aspects this little bean has on the health of the human body.

Alcohol and chocolate took their turn on the health chopping block and eventually managed to come out with an approval from the health folks. Now it looks like coffee gets its turn at the health professionals limelight. Not saying that it is completely off the hook, but it is getting some good health reviews.

One reason for that are antioxidants. Coffee contains them and, as we all know, antioxidants offer an amount of cardiovascular protection.

What this does is to lower the risk of diabetes which contributes to heart disease, so that is a good thing for you coffee lovers out there. Actually, if you are a heavy drinker, you are half as likely to develop diabetes as your light coffee drinking friends

Now we all know that a cup of coffee can bring up your blood pressure. But there have now been some long-term studies that seem to be showing that coffee may not increase the risk for high blood pressure over time, which is what the professionals used to think. It’s also somewhat possible that over a period of time people will develop a tolerance to coffee’s hypertension effects.

The latest studies also seem to lend credence to the theory that coffee drinkers are less likely to develop liver cancer - a full fifty percent less than non-coffee drinkers. A pretty impressive fact in and of its self. It also can lower the risk for colon, breast and rectal cancers.

They is research that shows that a coffee drinker is less likely to develop gallstone disease because coffee alters the cholesterol content of the bile in the liver

It also appears the men - though not women - can get some protection from Parkinson’s disease by the regular use of coffee.

Coffee has also been linked to have a positive effect on Alzheimer’s disease, Skin Cancer, Liver Disease, and more. Not a bad rap sheet for a small little bean.

Some research even comes to the conclusion that drinking two cups of coffee before that workout at the gym can reduce your muscle pain after the workout. The claim here is that the caffeine acts as a pain blocker to the sore muscles. A lot of people take ibuprofen or aspirin but recent studies show that the caffeine is actually more beneficial than the pain reliever for moderate workout pain.

Since coffee is one of America’s favorite beverages, it is nice to know that it is also America’s number one source of antioxidants. What wonderful news. Something we like that is actually GOOD for us.

Bunn single serve my cafe coffee maker

The Bunn My cafe is the one cup coffeemaker for those of us on the go!

For some people, a full pot of coffee is just way too much, so, for the individual cup, there are one serve coffee makers like the My Café Single-Server Coffee/Tea Pod Brewers, which enables a person to brew just one cup of coffee or tea at a time whenever they want it.

Most consumers seem to agree that this product is a handy little kitchen appliance. Some of its good points seem to be that it is fast and very simple to use.

It heats the water quickly and starts to brew instantly, so there’s no long wait, and there’s also a choice on what size drink you wish to brew.

The My Café Single-Serve Coffee/Tea Pod Brewer comes with both coffee and tea pod included. Some consumers have claimed it also makes a great cup of hot chocolate.

They stated that it makes great tasting hot drinks almost instantly, and that clean up is easy because the individual coffee/tea maker is dishwasher safe.

Another feature of convenience seems to be the fact that if you should accidentally press the button to brew a 12 oz. cup of coffee or tea and mistakenly place an 8 oz. cup under the spout, it’s not a problem because there is a button to stop the brewing process, eliminating the possibility of overflow.

People also seem to like the sleep mode this little coffee maker has, after 6 hours the sleep mode is initiated and after two weeks it shuts off, and also, some say, it comes with a very fair warranty.

Even though most consumers find this product very useful, others feel that there is room for improvement. One of the complaints is the fact that it sometimes leaks while in the brewing process and they don’t quite get the size coffee they program in with their first cup.

After brewing, it is said that it continues to leak up to 3 ozs in the drip tray, and doesn’t work too well with soft water. Although, for the most part, consumers say there is a good warranty on this product.

Others tend to disagree, stating that they have returned the My Café Single-Serve Coffee/Tea Pod Brewer and have been waiting for quite a while for a response from the manufacturer. There have also been comments that this product is too high priced for the performance it gives.

To improve this product, people would like to see a lower price range, and improved customer service practices. Some say it makes too much noise while in the brewing process while others claim they are impressed by how quietly it performs.

Some say it this coffee maker is way too expensive and not worth the price they are asking, while others claim it is well worth the price.

But one thing that most consumers seem to agree on is the fact that the Bunn My Cafe makes excellent tasting coffee and tea, and the convenience of brewing one cup at a time is super.
